Springtime Family Travel Splendor: Austria's Enchanting Family Landscapes

Updated: 4 days ago

As winter retreats and the first blossoms of spring paint the landscapes with vibrant hues, there’s no place quite like Austria for a family escape steeped in luxury, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. From the storybook village of Hallstatt , to the historic streets of Salzburg, follow us through Austria’s most picturesque destinations, perfect for creating cherished family memories amidst opulent settings, perfect for an opulent family holiday.

We landed in Munich which worked perfectly well for this trip as we coupled it with sights and sounds of Bavaria, Germany, which I detail in 'A German Tapestry of Adventures with Children: Bavaria and Munich'. From Munich, Salzburg, Austria is less than 2 hours away and with a rental car, this is an easy commute. As an alternative, if you want to visit Austria only, there is also an option to land in Salzburg directly.

Discovering Hallstatt: A Lakeside Treasure

Our Austrian journey began in Hallstatt, a charming village that seems plucked from a fairy tale. After years of admiring Hallstatt on our television screensaver, nothing prepared us for the breathtaking reality. Standing on the lakeshore, the crisp mountain air, and the serenity of this hidden treasure felt like stepping into a dream. Nestled between the glassy waters of Hallstätter and the dramatic Dachstein mountains, Hallstatt is renowned for its 16th-century Alpine houses and meandering alleys, making it a perfect start to a luxurious family travel getaway. A few steps away, the market square is a delightful little stop for some ice-cream and lunch.

By renting a private electric boat, we explored the pristine waters which are blanketed by panoramic alpine vistas, for a serene escape perfect for intimate family moments.. Venture up the funicular railway to the ancient salt mines, where the promise of underground slides and a subterranean salt lake awaits to thrill the children.

Overall, its easy to spend a day or two here and even though we didn't stay overnight, I would highly recommend this, if you want to visit the town luxuriously at your leisure, the perfect setting for an exclusive family escape.

Salzburg: A Symphony of Culture and History

From the serene charm of Hallstatt, we made our way to the vibrant city of Salzburg, where the air feels alive with the echoes of its rich musical heritage and breathtaking baroque architecture. As the birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is a city that truly sings, enveloping us in its timeless cultural elegance. It was an unforgettable stop on our family adventure, combining history, music, and beauty at every turn.

Cultural Exploration: One of our highlights was a guided tour of the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched high above the city. Our son loved the panoramic views, and we were all fascinated by the centuries-old stories that came to life as we explored this iconic landmark. A leisurely stroll down Getreidegasse, lined with charming boutiques and historic buildings, including Mozart’s birthplace, made for a perfect afternoon. He loved learning more about Mozart's childhood and has a little lego Mozart keepsake that he utterly adores. The energy of the street and its historic beauty captivated both us and our little ones.

Musical Evenings: We couldn't resist experiencing the world-renowned Salzburg Festival—a must for music lovers. Even if opera isn’t typically part of your family’s itinerary, the performances are nothing short of extraordinary. For the children, a visit to Mozart’s Residence offered a fun and interactive way to learn about one of the world’s greatest composers. Watching them explore the exhibits and connect with Mozart’s music was a special family moment we’ll never forget.

The Austrian Alps, featured prominently in The Sound of Music, offer a magical backdrop for families visiting Austria. The towering peaks of the Untersberg and Hoher Göll mountains, part of the Eastern Alps, are perfect for family hikes or scenic drives. These iconic mountains are also where Maria taught the von Trapp children to sing, making it a memorable destination for families who love the movie.
