One of our favourite family traditions during the festive season is going to the theatre, ballet and Christmas concerts. There is something particularly special about watching a child become completely absorbed in a performance, whether it’s the excitement of a West End musical, the beauty of The Nutcracker or the joy of singing Christmas carols alongside hundreds of other families.

Over the years, I’ve made a point of introducing my son to different forms of live performance, and Christmas provides some wonderful opportunities to do so. From the Royal Opera House and Royal Albert Hall to London’s historic theatres, we’ve enjoyed everything from classical ballet and orchestral concerts to pantomimes and festive musicals. Some have become annual traditions, while others have introduced him to music, storytelling and performances he might not otherwise have encountered.

In this guide, I’ve brought together the best Christmas shows in London for kids, with suitability by age, including West End productions, ballets, concerts and traditional carols. I’ve also included recommendations by age, because choosing the right performance can make all the difference to how much children enjoy the experience, particularly when introducing them to theatre or classical music for the first time.
