London's Christmas markets are one of the loveliest ways to enjoy the festive season, whether you're looking for artisan gifts, seasonal food, beautifully decorated streets or an afternoon exploring somewhere new.

For families, I particularly enjoy markets where there's something else nearby to discover. A riverside walk, a historic palace or an interesting neighbourhood can turn a simple shopping trip into a memorable Christmas day out.

From the Southbank Centre Winter Market and Covent Garden to Greenwich, King's Cross and Hampton Court Palace, this guide explores some of the best Christmas markets in London for 2026, including practical visiting tips and which experiences are particularly worthwhile with children.

Best Festive Markets and Winter Experiences for Families

Southbank Centre Winter Market 2026: Best for Festive Food and Riverside Walks

Best for: Families who enjoy Christmas treats, illuminated riverside walks and a lively festive atmosphere.

The Southbank Centre Winter Market stretches along Queen's Walk beneath Hungerford Bridge, with traditional Alpine-style chalets selling street food, seasonal drinks and gifts. Its location beside the Thames makes it particularly atmospheric in the late afternoon and evening, with views across the river towards Westminster.

What to Do with Kids

For children, the main attraction at the market itself is choosing something delicious from the food stalls, exploring the illuminated chalets and enjoying the bustling Christmas atmosphere. However, this is primarily a food and shopping market rather than a fairground, so I wouldn't recommend it to families expecting lots of rides or organised children's activities. Younger children can enjoy the carousel at nearby Jubilee Gardens when operating, while the Southbank Centre's separate winter programme may offer family performances and creative activities. It's worth checking those events in advance if you want more than a short market visit.

Our Tip: Arrive in the late afternoon, enjoy the market before it becomes too crowded, and stay to see the riverfront illuminated. For younger children, combine the visit with one pre-booked activity rather than relying on the market alone.

South Bank Centre offers a lovely immersive Christmas market with tons of stalls for families.

Covent Garden Christmas Market 2026: Best for Christmas Snowfall and Street Entertainment

Best for: Younger children who love Christmas decorations, street performers and the excitement of artificial snowfall.

Covent Garden is one of London's most atmospheric Christmas destinations, with its enormous Christmas tree, spectacular golden bells and beautifully decorated Market Building. Although it isn't a traditional Christmas market filled with wooden chalets, the shops, food stalls, cafés and festive displays make it a popular destination for families.

What to Do with Kids

The most exciting attraction for children is the artificial snowfall beside Covent Garden's famous Christmas tree. The free snowfall experience is expected to return, although the official dates and times for 2026 have not yet been announced. Children can also watch the street entertainers in the Piazza, where performances may include musicians, juggling, comedy and other acts. These aren't scheduled children's shows, but they can be surprisingly entertaining for younger visitors. Families can explore the decorated Market Building, choose Christmas treats and enjoy the festive displays. The 2026 Theatre of Christmas celebrations also promise festive performances, particularly around the Christmas lights switch-on on 12 November. I wouldn't promise the return of the reindeer-and-sleigh photo installation until this year's decorations are confirmed.

Our Tip: Plan your visit around the snowfall once the 2026 schedule is released. The combination of falling snow, street entertainment and the Christmas tree is the real attraction for children, rather than the shopping itself.

Covent Garden Christmas market is always a favourite with immersive acts, Christmas stalls and 'snow' on selected days and times.

The Intentional Holiday Guide

Our free guide explores how to approach Christmas more thoughtfully, choosing the traditions and experiences that make the season meaningful rather than simply filling the calendar.

With so many wonderful Christmas experiences available, it’s easy to feel that we should be doing everything. But the traditions children remember most aren’t necessarily the most expensive or elaborate. I think there’s something valuable in choosing a smaller number of experiences that genuinely matter to your family, leaving enough time to enjoy the season without rushing from one activity to another.

Battersea Christmas Market 2026: Best for Ice Skating and Family Entertainment

Best for: Families who want a mixture of festive shopping, ice skating and indoor activities.

Battersea Power Station offers a more contemporary Christmas experience, combining its spectacular restored architecture with seasonal decorations, restaurants, shops and festive events. Unlike a traditional Christmas market, its appeal lies in the wider Christmas programme around the Power Station and riverside.

What to Do with Kids

Battersea is particularly appealing for families because there are several activities children can enjoy beyond browsing the shops. The Glide ice-skating experience returns for the 2026 festive season, offering an opportunity to skate beside the Power Station. Inside, younger children may enjoy visiting the Peppa Pig store, while LEGO fans can explore the LEGO shop. Families can also book a film at the cinema or enjoy the interactive elements of Lift 109, which takes visitors up one of the Power Station's chimneys for panoramic views over London. These are separate attractions, with individual tickets or admission arrangements where applicable, rather than activities included in a Christmas market visit.

Our Tip: Choose one main activity, particularly ice skating or Lift 109, and build the rest of the visit around it. Battersea is a better choice for children when you plan an activity rather than expecting the seasonal shopping stalls to entertain them for several hours.

Battersea Station has an amazing Christmas section with the ice rink, carousels and Christmas market stalls

Winter by the River, London Bridge: Best for Tower Bridge Views and Festive Food

Best for: Families who enjoy Christmas treats, riverside sightseeing and an atmospheric evening walk.

Winter by the River has traditionally transformed the riverside near London Bridge into a festive destination, with seasonal market stalls, food, drinks and Christmas decorations. Its location overlooking Tower Bridge makes it particularly attractive after dark.

What to Do with Kids

Children can enjoy exploring the festive stalls, choosing seasonal sweets or hot chocolate and admiring the illuminated riverside. Previous editions have also featured curling activities, although the 2026 programme has not yet been confirmed and age restrictions may apply. I wouldn't describe curling as a guaranteed children's activity until this year's arrangements are published. For older children, combining the market with the glass-floor walkway at Tower Bridge can make the outing much more memorable, while younger children may simply enjoy watching the boats on the Thames and exploring the Christmas decorations. Tower Bridge is a separate ticketed attraction.

Our Tip: This is best for a shorter festive visit rather than a full afternoon of children's entertainment. I'd combine it with Tower Bridge or another nearby attraction, and only recommend curling once the 2026 family sessions are confirmed.

Greenwich Market at Christmas 2026: Best for Lantern Parades and Family Festivities

Best for: Families who enjoy Christmas traditions, independent gifts and festive activities in a historic neighbourhood.

Greenwich Market is an established covered market rather than a temporary Christmas fair. During the festive season, its independent stalls, handmade gifts, food and surrounding decorations make it an enjoyable destination for families.

What to Do with Kids

Greenwich has a particularly appealing Christmas programme for children. On 18 November 2026, its traditional Lantern Parade brings local schoolchildren through Greenwich carrying handmade lanterns, followed by the Christmas lights switch-on and an appearance by Father Christmas. The parade is scheduled for 4pm–4.50pm, with the lights switch-on at 5pm. The wider Greenwich Christmas programme also features the Queen's House Ice Rink, a Santa's Grotto and the Greenwich Theatre pantomime, all separate experiences that families can plan around. Children can browse the market's colourful craft stalls and choose a small handmade decoration or gift, although the market itself isn't a dedicated children's activity centre.

Our Tip: The Lantern Parade on 18 November is the standout family occasion. For a later December visit, combine the market with a pre-booked Santa experience, ice skating or the Greenwich pantomime.

King's Cross Christmas Markets 2026: Best for Creative Gifts and Harry Potter Fans

Best for: School-age children who enjoy creative markets, unusual Christmas decorations and Harry Potter.

King's Cross offers a different kind of Christmas market experience, with seasonal makers' markets, independent brands and festive installations around Coal Drops Yard and Granary Square. Previous programmes have included Christmas under the Canopy, Crafty Fox markets and themed cultural markets featuring handmade crafts, food and live music.

What to Do with Kids

For children, the appeal depends partly on which market is taking place. Previous King's Cross Christmas programmes have included colourful cultural celebrations, music and even piñatas at the Mexican Christmas Market, but those particular activities should not be assumed to return in 2026 until confirmed. Harry Potter fans can also visit the famous Platform 9¾ photo spot at King's Cross station, where children can pose with the luggage trolley disappearing through the wall, and browse the Harry Potter Shop. This is a permanent nearby attraction, not part of the Christmas market. Families with younger children can explore the festive installations around Coal Drops Yard and visit the nearby Word on the Water floating bookshop. Gingerbread City was also hosted here last year where kids can decorate gingerbread houses or browse the selection of winning houses submitted by gingerbread artists.

Our Tip: Check the individual market programme before choosing your date. If your children love Harry Potter, combine the Christmas markets with Platform 9¾, but expect queues at the photo spot during busy periods.

Kings Cross offers lots of Harry Potter themed decor and outside gorgeous food and the Gingerbread City

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Christmas Market

Best for: Families who want a traditional Christmas market atmosphere alongside fairground rides, festive food and activities for children of different ages.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is much more than a fairground. One of its main attractions is the traditional German-style Christmas market, with wooden chalets selling Christmas decorations, handmade gifts, sweets and seasonal treats. Families can also explore the Bavarian Village, with its indoor and covered entertainment areas, German food stalls, traditional sausages, pretzels and festive music. There's an enormous variety of food for children, from waffles, pancakes and churros to roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate and marshmallow-toasting experiences where available.

What to Do with Kids

Winter Wonderland offers one of the widest selections of children's activities of any Christmas destination in London. Younger children can enjoy Santa Land, with its smaller fairground rides, carousels and family attractions, while older children can explore the larger rides and roller coasters. The spectacular Magical Ice Kingdom is another highlight, featuring enormous ice sculptures and intricate frozen displays that children can walk through. Families can also ride the Giant Wheel for views over the illuminated fairground, visit the ice rink, enjoy festive shows and explore the traditional Christmas stalls.

Our Tip: Don't treat Winter Wonderland as just another Christmas market. Allow several hours, particularly if you're visiting with children, and plan your main attractions before arriving. I'd prioritise the German Christmas market and Bavarian Village for food and atmosphere, followed by the Magical Ice Kingdom and a few age-appropriate rides. Many attractions are charged separately, and the overall cost can add up quickly.

Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre 2026: Best for Immersive Christmas Experiences

Best for: Families who want a full Christmas day out with interactive storytelling, live performances and ice skating.

Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre takes place in the palace's Great Fountain Garden over two weekends in December, bringing together more than 100 artisan producers selling festive food, gifts and seasonal treats. Live music and carol singing add to the atmosphere, while the historic palace provides a beautiful backdrop.

What to Do with Kids

Hampton Court is one of the strongest family recommendations because the Christmas experience extends well beyond the market. New for 2026, the Winter Palace: The Christmas Beast Ball transforms the historic rooms into an immersive festive adventure, with live actors, puppets, mythical creatures and storytelling. Children can encounter characters including a unicorn foal and a dragon as they explore the decorated palace. The experience is included with palace admission, as is the Festive Fayre on its operating dates. Families can also explore the famous maze, enjoy music at the market's bandstand or book a separate session at Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink. The rink is also advertising special activities such as Skating Santa and live ice carving, with individual dates still to be announced.

Our Tip: This is one I'd genuinely recommend as a full Christmas family day out. Allow around two hours for the Winter Palace experience alone, then explore the Festive Fayre and gardens. If you're adding ice skating, book it separately and leave enough time between activities.

Leicester Square Christmas Market 2026: Best for Ice Skating and Festive Fairground Atmosphere

Best for: Families who enjoy skating, Christmas sweets and lively West End entertainment.

Leicester Square returns as a festive destination in 2026 with Skate Leicester Square, a circular outdoor ice rink surrounded by Christmas market stalls. Its central West End location makes it particularly convenient for families who want to combine festive activities with a theatre performance or a visit to nearby Covent Garden.

What to Do with Kids

The main confirmed activity for 2026 is ice skating, with sessions available for children aged three and over. Younger skaters can use double-bladed skates and hire skating aids, subject to availability and additional charges. Around the rink, families can explore Christmas market stalls selling traditional treats and gifts, making it an enjoyable stop for hot chocolate, sweets and festive shopping. Leicester Square has previously featured small fairground attractions, including rides and carousels, but I haven't found confirmation that those particular attractions are returning in 2026. I would therefore avoid promising them in the published article until the organiser announces them. The market is also conveniently located for combining with a children's West End show.

Our Tip: Book skating in advance, particularly at weekends. If your children are too young to skate, check whether additional fairground rides have been confirmed before making Leicester Square your main Christmas destination.

Wishing you a Merry Festive Season!
