Weekend Breaks UK: Luxury Family Escapes Worth Travelling For

Living in London, we are fortunate to have some of the country's most beautiful landscapes and exceptional hotels within a relatively easy drive. Over the years, we have made a point of exploring different parts of the English countryside with our son, often choosing a long weekend away rather than travelling abroad.
Some of our favourite weekend breaks in the UK have been surprisingly close to home. Within an hour, we can be walking through the grounds of a historic country estate overlooking the Thames. Travel a little further and we can spend the weekend playing tennis, swimming, exploring woodland or walking down to the coast. The Cotswolds offers something different again, with its villages, countryside and beautiful walking trails.
When choosing a luxury family hotel, I look beyond whether a property describes itself as family-friendly. The quality of the accommodation, restaurants and spa facilities matters enormously, but so does the surrounding environment. I want somewhere that offers enough for us to enjoy together, while still feeling like a proper break for the adults.
These three hotels offer quite different experiences. All are places we have stayed as a family, at different stages of our son's childhood, and each illustrates why the best weekend getaways in the UK depend as much on what you want to do as where you choose to stay.

Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire: Historic Luxury and National Trust Adventures
Approximately an hour from London, Cliveden House is one of the most convenient luxury country-house escapes we have experienced.
The approach to the hotel immediately establishes its character. This is a grand historic property, with magnificent interiors, formal gardens and a distinctly grown-up atmosphere. It is not the sort of hotel that immediately suggests a conventional family resort.
Yet when we stayed with our son, who was nine at the time, we found it worked exceptionally well for families. The reason is the combination of the hotel itself and the extraordinary National Trust estate surrounding it.

Staying at Cliveden House
We stayed in the main house, which allowed us to experience the atmosphere of the historic property rather than one of the estate's separate accommodation options. Cliveden's interiors are impressive, with the scale and grandeur you would expect from one of England's most celebrated country-house hotels.
Breakfast was a particular highlight. The dining room is beautiful, and sitting down to breakfast in such an elegant setting was one of the pleasures of staying there.
We also ate at the hotel restaurant during our visit. What I particularly appreciated was that the grown-up atmosphere didn't prevent us from enjoying the hotel as a family. Instead, we could move between the elegance of the house and the freedom of the surrounding estate.

Indoor and Outdoor Swimming Pools at Cliveden
For families searching for luxury hotels with swimming pools, Cliveden has the considerable advantage of offering both indoor and outdoor swimming. We used both during our summer stay.
The outdoor pool was especially lovely in the warm weather, allowing us to spend part of the day relaxing and swimming without leaving the hotel. Cliveden's outdoor pool is also historically significant and grand: the listed pool is associated with the estate's twentieth-century history.
The indoor pool provides another option, particularly when the weather is less predictable.
Importantly, Cliveden has designated children's swimming times. I found this a sensible arrangement in a hotel that accommodates both families and guests looking for a quieter spa experience.
The hotel currently publishes children's swimming hours of 9.15–10.45am and 4–5.30pm indoors, with a longer daytime window outdoors. These arrangements should be checked when booking.

Exploring the National Trust Estate at Cliveden With Kids
This is where Cliveden really distinguishes itself as a family weekend break.
The wider estate is managed by the National Trust and offers far more than formal gardens.
We spent a considerable amount of time exploring the grounds, walking through different parts of the estate and discovering how much there was for children to do.
One of the highlights was the maze. We also explored the gardens, walked around the ponds and made our way towards the Thames.
The estate offers a number of distinct family experiences, including the Storybook Play Den, woodland play trails, Clive's Den and the historic maze. The woodland trail incorporates natural play features such as stepping stones and balancing beams, while the maze provides a challenge for older children. The National Trust also organises seasonal activities during school holidays, making Cliveden particularly attractive for half-term breaks.
I would encourage families to allow proper time for the estate rather than treating it as somewhere to walk around briefly after breakfast. You could easily spend much of a day exploring.

Boating on the Thames
Another highlight was taking a boat trip on the River Thames.
Cliveden's position above the river is spectacular, and experiencing the landscape from the water gives you a completely different perspective. The estate has a long association with boating, and visitors can arrange river trips or hire boats through the boating operation at Cliveden.
Boat trips are seasonal and weather-dependent, generally operating between spring and autumn. We combined our time by the river with pizza, ice cream and a little picnic.
It was a lovely contrast to the formality of the hotel itself.
The National Trust estate also has cafés and refreshment points, including options near the gardens and river.

Cliveden House: Getting there from London
Getting there from London: Cliveden is the easiest of the three for a short escape, at roughly one hour by car from central London, depending on traffic. That proximity is one of its biggest advantages: even for a one-night stay, the journey feels proportionate to the amount of time you have there.
Who Is Cliveden House Best For?
Cliveden is particularly appealing for families who want a sophisticated country-house hotel without sacrificing activities for children.
The combination of swimming, gardens, woodland, boating and National Trust attractions means there is enough to fill a weekend without needing to leave the estate.
It is also one of my favourite options for a relatively spontaneous escape from London.
Best for: families wanting historic luxury, beautiful surroundings, indoor and outdoor pools, and extensive outdoor activities within approximately an hour of London.

Chewton Glen, Hampshire: A Luxury Spa Weekend With Sport, Woodland and the Coast
Chewton Glen offers a different kind of luxury weekend break.
Where Cliveden is defined by its historic grandeur and National Trust estate, Chewton Glen combines country-house elegance with exceptional sporting facilities, an extensive spa and access to the Hampshire coast.
We stayed when our son was around seven, choosing accommodation in the main house overlooking the croquet lawns. It remains one of the most enjoyable active family hotel stays we have had in England.

Staying at Chewton Glen
One of Chewton Glen's greatest strengths is the size and variety of its grounds. There is an enormous amount of space to explore, and the hotel has managed to combine traditional country-house hospitality with facilities that make it feel considerably more versatile than many comparable properties.
We stayed in the main house, close to the croquet lawns, which made it easy to move between the hotel and the activities. We played croquet, tennis and padel, swam and spent time exploring the surrounding woodland. What stood out was how much we could do together without organising an elaborate itinerary.

Tennis, Padel, Croquet and Golf
For an active family, Chewton Glen's sporting facilities are a major attraction.
We particularly enjoyed the indoor tennis and padel facilities, which allowed us to play regardless of the weather.
The tennis centre currently advertises indoor and outdoor courts, with tennis and pickleball among its listed facilities. The hotel also has a nine-hole par-three golf course. Court configuration and padel availability should be confirmed directly when booking. Chewton Glen
Croquet was another lovely part of our stay. There is something particularly enjoyable about being able to spend an afternoon moving between different sports without leaving the hotel grounds. For families with school-age children, this is a significant advantage.

The Spa at Chewton Glen
Chewton Glen's spa deserves considerably more attention than it usually receives in family hotel roundups. The spa facilities are exceptional and are a substantial part of what makes the hotel attractive for adults.
We used the indoor swimming pool during our stay, and I was impressed by the scale and quality of the facilities. The spa includes a 17-metre indoor pool, hydrotherapy facilities, an outdoor heated pool, an outdoor whirlpool, steam rooms, saunas, treatment rooms and dedicated relaxation spaces. Chewton Glen
This makes Chewton Glen particularly appealing for families looking for a spa weekend in the UK that still offers plenty for children. The hotel also welcomes external spa guests, and family swimming arrangements should be checked before arrival.
For me, the attraction is the ability to combine a genuinely impressive spa experience with sport, woodland and family activities. You are not choosing between a luxury hotel for adults and somewhere enjoyable for children.

Walking Through the Woodland to the Beach
One of my favourite memories of Chewton Glen was walking directly from the hotel through the woodland towards the beach.
In approximately 15 minutes, we reached the coast. That proximity is extraordinary for a country-house hotel. It means you can spend the morning swimming or playing tennis, then head out for a walk through the trees and emerge beside the sea.
It also creates a very different atmosphere from an inland country estate. We didn't use a children's club during our stay. There was already more than enough to occupy us through the sporting facilities, swimming, woodland and beach.

Exploring the Grounds
One of the quieter pleasures of staying at Chewton Glen was simply exploring the estate. We walked through the grounds and stopped to see the sheep, which was such a simple but lovely part of the stay with our son. Alongside the tennis, padel, swimming and children's club, moments like this made the hotel feel less like somewhere we needed to plan activities and more like somewhere we could simply wander and discover things together. The combination of animals, woodland and the walk down to the beach gave us plenty to explore without ever needing to get into the car.

Chewton Glen: Getting there from London
Getting there from London: Chewton Glen is around two to three hours by car from London, depending on traffic, so I would ideally choose it for a two-night weekend rather than a single night. Despite the longer journey, arriving somewhere with woodland, extensive grounds and the coast within walking distance makes it feel like a genuine change of environment.
Who Is Chewton Glen Best For?
Chewton Glen is an excellent choice for families who enjoy being active together but also appreciate exceptional spa facilities and country-house luxury.
Best for: active families, spa enthusiasts and anyone wanting a luxury weekend that combines sport, countryside and coastal access.

The Fish Hotel, Cotswolds: A Relaxed Countryside Escape With Young Children
The Fish offers something different again.
Located on the Farncombe Estate above Broadway in the Cotswolds, it is less formal than Cliveden or Chewton Glen and particularly appealing for families who want to spend time outdoors. We stayed when our son was just over one.
At that stage, our priorities were very different from travelling with a seven- or nine-year-old.
We weren't looking for tennis courts or organised children's activities. We wanted somewhere beautiful, comfortable and relaxed, with opportunities to explore the countryside at our own pace.

Staying at The Fish With a Toddler
We stayed in one of the hotel's rooms and spent much of our time exploring the surrounding estate.
One of my strongest memories is walking through the woodland during bluebell season.
Our son was still very small, and the experience was less about visiting attractions than simply enjoying the landscape together and enjoying the playground.
The hotel had a relaxed atmosphere, a lovely restaurant and communal spaces, including a pool table. It was an enjoyable place to stay without the formality associated with some traditional luxury country-house hotels.

Exploring the Farncombe Estate
The Fish is set within the 500-acre Farncombe Estate, with walking trails and access to the surrounding Cotswolds countryside. Today, the hotel also offers a woodland playground and a range of outdoor activities, with age restrictions applying to some experiences. The Fish Hotel
The estate is a significant part of the appeal.
For families with younger children, being able to spend time outside without constantly getting into the car makes a real difference. We particularly enjoyed the woodland walks, which were ideal for the stage our son was at.

Treehouses, Woodland Huts and Hot Tubs
Although we stayed in a conventional hotel room, The Fish now offers a wider selection of accommodation, including treehouses, suites and woodland huts.
Some of the huts have private hot tubs, making the property relevant to couples looking for a Cotswolds cabin with a hot tub.
However, families should check accommodation suitability carefully. The hotel's family treehouses can accommodate two adults and two children under twelve and feature a separate bunk room and outdoor heated baths. Some other accommodation, including particular hot-tub huts, is designed for adults rather than children. The Fish Hotel
This is worth understanding before booking, especially if travelling with younger children.

Exploring the Cotswolds From The Fish
Another reason to choose The Fish is its location near Broadway.
The Cotswolds is one of the most appealing regions in England for a countryside weekend, with beautiful villages, historic market towns, gardens, walking routes and places to stop for lunch.
We used our stay as an opportunity to explore the surrounding area rather than spending the entire weekend at the hotel.
For families planning a longer visit, I would recommend combining time on the estate with visits to some of the Cotswolds' best-known villages and countryside attractions.

The Fish Hotel: Getting there from London
Getting there from London: The Fish, near Broadway in the Cotswolds, is approximately two to two and a half hours by car from London, depending on traffic. For us, it works best as a two-night Cotswolds escape, particularly because the hotel can be combined with exploring the surrounding villages and countryside.
Who Is The Fish Best For?
The Fish is particularly well suited to families who want a relaxed countryside break rather than a formal luxury hotel experience. It worked beautifully for us with a very young child, and the current accommodation options make it worth considering for families with older children too.
Best for: Cotswolds countryside, woodland walks, relaxed family stays and exploring the region.

Which UK Weekend Break Is Right for Your Family?
The three hotels offer quite different experiences, and I would choose between them based on the kind of weekend we wanted.
For an easy escape from London, Cliveden is particularly convenient. The combination of its historic house, swimming pools and National Trust estate makes it an excellent option when you want a luxury hotel with plenty to do. For an active weekend, Chewton Glen offers the greatest variety of sporting and spa facilities, alongside woodland and the beach. For a more relaxed countryside break, The Fish provides a lovely base for exploring the Cotswolds, particularly with younger children. What these stays have reinforced for me is that a successful family weekend depends on more than a beautiful hotel.
The best properties allow parents to enjoy the things they value, excellent accommodation, food, spa facilities and beautiful surroundings, while giving children opportunities to explore, participate and enjoy the experience in their own way.
That balance is what makes a weekend away worthwhile. If you are thinking of a London staycation, The Milestone Hotel in London, might be one that you consider.
Planning a Luxury Weekend Break in the UK
When planning a short family break, I usually start with the time available rather than the hotel itself.
If we only have one night, somewhere close to London is often preferable. For two nights, travelling further becomes much more appealing, particularly when the hotel offers enough activities to justify the journey.
I also consider the season. A country-house hotel with an outdoor pool is particularly attractive in summer, while extensive indoor facilities can make a significant difference during autumn and winter.
With younger children, the surrounding landscape and ease of getting outdoors can matter more than organised activities. With older children, sports, swimming, exploration and opportunities to participate in new experiences become increasingly valuable. These are the considerations behind my approach to Formative Travel™: choosing experiences that are enjoyable for the whole family while also taking account of a child's age, interests and developing independence.
Booking Your UK Weekend Break
