Why The Milestone, Kensington Could Be the Best Luxury Family Hotel in London

London is home to some of the world's most iconic luxury hotels. From the grandeur of Mayfair to the elegance of Knightsbridge, there is certainly no shortage of exceptional places to stay. Yet travelling as a family changes the definition of luxury entirely. Beautiful interiors and impeccable service remain important, but they are no longer enough. Parents begin looking for spacious suites rather than simply luxurious bedrooms, locations that allow children room to explore, thoughtful family experiences, and hotels that genuinely welcome younger guests rather than simply accommodating them.

For me, that is exactly where The Milestone Hotel stands apart. Opposite Kensington Palace and overlooking Kensington Gardens, it offers something that is increasingly difficult to find in central London: a true sense of space. It combines the intimacy of a beautifully restored boutique hotel with the facilities and service expected from one of London's finest five-star properties, while somehow maintaining the warmth of a private residence rather than the formality often associated with luxury hotels.

Perhaps my connection to this hotel is also deeply personal. Long before The Kensington Diary became my brand, Kensington was simply home. It was where I spent my pregnancy, where my son spent his earliest years discovering London's parks and museums, and where some of our happiest family memories were made. Returning years later, this time as guests at The Milestone Hotel, felt less like checking into a hotel and more like returning to a neighbourhood that still feels wonderfully familiar.

From the moment we arrived, that feeling of familiarity continued. Looking out across Kensington Gardens towards Kensington Palace from our suite, I was reminded why I have always believed this is one of London's finest neighbourhoods for families. While many visitors instinctively choose Mayfair, Kensington offers something entirely different. It provides immediate access to acres of Royal Parkland, world-class museums, beautiful residential streets and a pace of life that somehow feels calmer despite being only minutes from the very centre of London.

That balance defines our entire experience at The Milestone. It never feels like a hotel competing to be the grandest or the most extravagant. Instead, it quietly excels through thoughtful design, exceptional service and an understanding that true luxury is often found in the details. It is the kind of place where children are made to feel just as welcome as their parents, where returning to your suite after a day exploring London genuinely feels like coming home, and where the location allows you to experience one of the capital's most beautiful neighbourhoods exactly as the people who live there do.

Having now stayed at numerous luxury hotels around the world, including several exceptional properties within the Red Carnation collection, I can confidently say that The Milestone offers one of the most complete luxury family experiences we have found in any major city. It is not simply a beautiful hotel in an outstanding location. It is a hotel that understands how families actually travel, and that, more than anything else, is why I believe it deserves to be considered one of the best luxury family hotels in London.

Why Kensington is London's Best Neighbourhood for Families

Whenever people ask me where they should stay on their first visit to London, they often expect me to recommend Mayfair or Knightsbridge. While both undoubtedly offer exceptional luxury, I almost always find myself suggesting Kensington instead. Having lived here myself, I know that what makes this neighbourhood so special extends far beyond its elegant architecture and prestigious postcode. It offers something surprisingly rare in the heart of a capital city: space.

Step outside The Milestone Hotel and, within moments, you are walking through Kensington Gardens, one of London's most beautiful Royal Parks. Children can spend the morning climbing aboard the pirate ship at the Diana Memorial Playground, feeding ducks on the Long Water or simply running across acres of open green space before the city begins to bustle. That freedom is something very few central London hotels can offer, and it changes the entire rhythm of a family holiday.

Kensington also places many of London's greatest attractions comfortably within walking distance. Kensington Palace sits directly opposite the hotel, while the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum can all be reached on foot, making sightseeing wonderfully easy without relying on the Underground. The Royal Albert Hall is only a short stroll away, and Knightsbridge, Harrods, Chelsea and even Mayfair are all close enough to explore before returning to the quieter surroundings of Kensington at the end of the day.

For us, there is another layer to this neighbourhood that makes it particularly meaningful. This was home for several years while my son was very young, and returning brought back countless memories of everyday life here. We remembered morning walks through the gardens, stopping for coffee along Kensington High Street, weekends spent in the museums and long afternoons simply enjoying one of London's most beautiful neighbourhoods. Staying at The Milestone allowed us to experience those familiar surroundings from a completely different perspective, and somehow made us appreciate them even more.

That is why I believe Kensington remains one of London's finest neighbourhoods for families. It combines everything visitors hope to experience in London—history, culture, world-class attractions and exceptional dining—while offering the green space, tranquillity and sense of community that make travelling with children feel far less overwhelming than many other parts of the city.

Staying in Kensington is perfect for families as it offers access to museums, garden spaces, and is suburban so suites are larger.

Our Stay in the Kensington Suite

Finding genuinely spacious accommodation in central London is far more difficult than many people expect. Even some of the capital's finest luxury hotels can feel surprisingly compact once you begin travelling as a family. The Kensington Suite at The Milestone was the complete opposite.

Occupying two beautifully designed floors, the suite felt more like an elegant London townhouse than a hotel room. The lower level was centred around a generous sitting room, dining and office area, with large windows framing uninterrupted views across Kensington Gardens towards Kensington Palace. It was a space that encouraged us to slow down, whether that meant enjoying coffee while watching the park come to life in the morning or relaxing together after a day exploring the city.

Upstairs, the principal bedroom offered a wonderfully peaceful retreat with an impressive marble bathroom and equally spectacular views across the gardens. Waking each morning to the sight of Kensington Palace framed by centuries-old trees was one of those simple luxuries that stayed with us long after we returned home.

My son immediately discovered that The Milestone had been thinking about him long before we arrived. Waiting in the suite was his own beautifully prepared play tent, complete with activity books, puzzles, colouring supplies, crafts, sweets and thoughtful little gifts. Rather than feeling like children's amenities that had been added as an afterthought, everything had been carefully prepared to make him feel just as welcome as every adult guest. It is a small gesture, but one that says a great deal about the hotel's philosophy.

Our arrival was equally generous for us. Fresh fruit, handmade cakes, delicious treats and a bottle of champagne were already waiting in the suite, creating the sort of warm welcome that immediately encourages you to settle in rather than rush back out to explore.

What impressed me most, however, was not simply the size or luxury of the suite. It was how comfortable it felt. So many luxury hotel suites are designed to be admired. The Kensington Suite was designed to be lived in. As a family, that made all the difference.

Cherry Blossom Afternoon Tea at The Milestone

One of the highlights of our stay coincided with spring, when The Milestone unveiled its seasonal Cherry Blossom Afternoon Tea. Afternoon tea has become something of a London institution, yet this felt refreshingly different. Rather than simply serving beautifully presented pastries and sandwiches, the entire experience celebrated the arrival of spring, with delicate floral details woven throughout both the menu and the presentation.

Served in Cheneston's, the hotel's elegant restaurant overlooking Kensington Gardens, it was exactly the sort of experience that encourages you to slow down for an afternoon. The atmosphere felt refined yet wonderfully relaxed, allowing families, couples and friends alike to enjoy one of Britain's most cherished traditions without any sense of formality.

The selection of teas was particularly impressive. Alongside classic favourites, we were invited to explore an extraordinary collection sourced from around the world, including one of the world's rarest and most expensive teas. It was a lovely reminder that afternoon tea here is not simply about the food; it is about the entire experience, from the carefully selected teas to the attentive yet unobtrusive service that Red Carnation Hotels have become so well known for.

The pastries themselves were beautifully crafted, inspired by the colours and delicate beauty of cherry blossom season, while the traditional finger sandwiches and freshly baked scones ensured the experience remained unmistakably British. Sitting beside the window overlooking the gardens, watching London begin to bloom outside, it felt like the perfect way to celebrate spring in one of the city's most beautiful neighbourhoods.

Dining at The Milestone Hotel

One of the things I have always appreciated about Red Carnation Hotels is that the dining never feels secondary to the accommodation. Food is treated as an integral part of the experience, and The Milestone is no exception.

Each morning began with breakfast in Cheneston's, where guests can enjoy both an extensive buffet and an excellent à la carte menu. Fresh pastries, fruit, cereals and continental options are complemented by beautifully prepared cooked breakfasts, making it easy to tailor the meal to every member of the family. We particularly appreciated the flexibility of having both options available, allowing us to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out to explore London.

In the evening we chose to dine in The Stables Bar, which has a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. Rich wood panelling, equestrian-inspired interiors and impeccable service create a space that feels both elegant and welcoming rather than overly formal.

Our meal was exceptional. We shared beautifully prepared tuna sashimi alongside delicious tacos and a selection of other small plates, each one presented with the same attention to detail that we have come to expect throughout the Red Carnation collection. It was sophisticated enough for adults while remaining relaxed enough that we never felt uncomfortable dining as a family.

That balance is something The Milestone achieves remarkably well. Children are welcomed warmly rather than merely tolerated, allowing parents to enjoy outstanding food without ever feeling that they need to rush. It reflects the wider philosophy of the hotel: luxury should feel effortless, not restrictive.

The Spa and Private Swimming Pool

One feature that often surprises people is that The Milestone offers a spa and swimming pool at all.

Finding a luxury boutique hotel in central London with wellness facilities is relatively unusual. Finding one where guests can reserve private access makes it even more special.

During our stay we booked our own session, giving us exclusive use of the facilities. Instead of sharing the pool with numerous other guests, we were able to enjoy a wonderfully peaceful experience together as a family, something that felt remarkably indulgent in the heart of one of the world's busiest cities.

The heated swimming pool is complemented by a sauna and cold plunge, creating a compact yet beautifully designed wellness space that allows guests to completely switch off after a day exploring London. While many larger luxury hotels offer more extensive spa facilities, very few provide the intimacy that The Milestone manages to achieve.

For us, it became another example of why this hotel works so well for families. After spending the day walking through museums, exploring Kensington Gardens or shopping in Knightsbridge, returning for a private swim offered the perfect opportunity to relax together before dinner.

It is these thoughtful experiences that continue to distinguish The Milestone from many of London's larger luxury hotels. Rather than trying to compete through scale, it succeeds by creating moments that feel personal, exclusive and genuinely memorable.

Why We Keep Returning to Red Carnation Hotels

There are very few hotel groups that we return to time and time again, regardless of where we are travelling in the world. Red Carnation is one of them.

Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to stay at several of their remarkable properties, including The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa overlooking Cape Town's dramatic Atlantic coastline and the iconic Oyster Box in Umhlanga, South Africa. Despite each hotel having its own personality, architecture and setting, there is a consistency that runs through the entire collection. It is never simply about luxury. It is about people.

There is a warmth to the service that feels increasingly rare. Staff remember your name. They take a genuine interest in your family. Children are treated as valued guests rather than an inconvenience, and nothing ever feels too much trouble. That level of hospitality cannot be designed through beautiful interiors or expensive furnishings. It comes from a culture that places people at the very centre of the experience.

The Milestone embodies that philosophy perfectly.

From the thoughtful welcome waiting our son in our suite to the ease with which every request was handled, there was never a moment when we felt like just another room number. Every interaction felt personal, natural and sincerely welcoming.

For us, that consistency is one of Red Carnation's greatest strengths. Whether we are staying beside the Atlantic Ocean in Cape Town, overlooking the Indian Ocean at The Oyster Box, or opposite Kensington Palace in the heart of London, we know exactly what to expect. Beautiful hotels may attract you once. Exceptional hospitality is what brings you back.

What to Do Around The Milestone Hotel in Kensington

One of The Milestone Hotel's greatest strengths is its location. Unlike many luxury hotels that encourage you to spend most of your time within the property, The Milestone places you in the heart of one of London's most elegant and walkable neighbourhoods.

Directly opposite the hotel are Kensington Palace and Kensington Gardens, while the Royal Albert Hall, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Hyde Park, Harrods and the boutiques of Knightsbridge are all within easy walking distance. For families, it is difficult to imagine a better base for exploring London without constantly relying on taxis or the Underground.

Having lived in Kensington myself, I genuinely believe it is one of the capital's finest neighbourhoods for families. If you're planning to spend a few days exploring the area, I've put together a separate guide to the Best Things to Do in South Kensington with Children, where I share my favourite museums, parks, cafés and family-friendly experiences. It's the perfect companion to a stay at The Milestone Hotel.

Why The Milestone the Best Luxury Family Hotel in London?

Every family travels differently, and no single hotel can ever claim to be the perfect choice for everyone.

If your priority is the largest spa in London, there are hotels that offer more extensive wellness facilities. If you are looking for hundreds of rooms, multiple restaurants or vast leisure complexes, there are certainly larger properties across the capital.

What makes The Milestone exceptional is something altogether different. It understands that luxury family travel is rarely about having the most facilities. It is about creating an environment where every member of the family feels genuinely cared for.

Here, parents can enjoy beautifully appointed suites, exceptional dining and impeccable service without sacrificing the practicalities that make travelling with children enjoyable. At the same time, younger guests are welcomed with the same warmth and attention as every adult, whether that is through thoughtful gifts waiting in the room, personalised service or simply being made to feel completely at ease throughout their stay.

Its location opposite Kensington Gardens only strengthens that experience. Having acres of green space, world-class museums and royal history quite literally across the road transforms a London city break into something that feels remarkably relaxed and surprisingly restorative.

For us, that combination is what sets The Milestone apart. It is not simply one of London's finest luxury hotels. It is one of the few luxury hotels that truly understands family travel.
