The Kensington Diary's guide to Halloween in London and beyond, from Chelsea's botanical workshops and Kensington's Halloween celebrations to haunted palaces, pumpkin picking and theme park adventures.

Halloween in London is becoming an increasingly wonderful occasion for families, with everything from creative workshops and theatrical storytelling to pumpkin trails, illuminated gardens and atmospheric experiences in some of the city's most historic settings.

Over the years, celebrating Halloween with my son has become one of our family traditions. From costumes and pumpkin carving to trick-or-treating, I've enjoyed seeing how the occasion changes as children grow.

For 2026, I've organised this guide by location, beginning with Kensington and Chelsea before exploring central London, the wider capital and some excellent day trips beyond it. Each recommendation includes age guidance to help families choose experiences that genuinely suit their children. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026, with many events taking place throughout the October half-term holidays.

1.Chelsea Physic Garden: Halloween Workshops and Enchanted Storytelling

Location: Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, SW3Dates: 19 October–1 November 2026Best for: Younger children, primary-school-aged families and adults, depending on the event.

Chelsea Physic Garden has created one of the most extensive and imaginative Halloween programmes in the area.Hidden behind its historic walls, the garden is a particularly atmospheric setting for botanical-inspired workshops, seasonal crafts and storytelling. Its programme spans nearly two weeks and offers far more than a single pumpkin-carving session.

Family Halloween activities include: Build a Beastly Bog Garden: 19 October, Witch's Knots and Braiding Spells: 21 October, Carnivorous Kokedama Making: 23 October and Witch's Hat Making: 25 October amongst many more.

Running from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, these 45-minute storytelling experiences invite families to discover the folklore of plants, spells and mysterious creatures. Led by professional storytellers, the experience moves through the garden and its glasshouses before gathering in the Enchanted Cottage for seasonal tales. Sessions take place at 3pm and 4pm, with tickets listed at £15 for children and £20 for adults.

For adults and older audiences: The garden also offers botanical witch-bottle making, mullein candle making, ghost stories, tea rituals and a Halloween-night film event. Check each organiser listing for age restrictions.

Why I'd recommend it: Chelsea Physic Garden offers an unusually thoughtful combination of nature, creativity and storytelling, particularly for children who enjoy making things and exploring unfamiliar ideas. Explore Chelsea Physic Garden's Halloween programme

2.Trotters: Halloween Storytelling and Creative Workshops

Best for: Younger children and primary-school-aged families.

Trotters on Kensington High Street is hosting a programme of intimate Halloween activities for children. Its Halloween story time takes place on 24 October at 11am, with additional October sessions listed.

During half term, families can also look out for creative workshops, including a knitting club for children aged five and over, trick-or-treat bag making for ages three and over, and potion making. This is an appealing choice for families looking for something smaller and more relaxed than a major attraction.

Good to know: Individual sessions have different age requirements, and advance booking may be necessary. Explore Kensington's Halloween events

Children can enjoy mask-making, myth-spotting and collaborative drawing inspired by Lost and Found in Mythology. Activities explore mythical creatures, spirits and shapeshifters through playful design. The museum is also offering October half-term Design Camps for children aged 7–14, including workshops involving clay and stage design.

For families interested in animation, the LAIKA exhibition offers another opportunity to explore the imaginative worlds created through stop-motion filmmaking.

Kensington High Street is celebrating Halloween with a neighbourhood trail that encourages families to explore participating shops and businesses.

Children follow a specially designed map, searching for clues displayed along the route. Once the questions have been completed, families can visit Bone Daddies on Phillimore Gardens to collect a treat bag. The trail is a lovely way to enjoy Halloween without committing to a large ticketed attraction. Along the route, families can also discover decorated shopfronts, seasonal menus and other Halloween activities taking place around Kensington.

Good to know: Trail maps are available online, at High Street Kensington station and from participating businesses. Download the Kensington Halloween Trail

For Halloween night itself, Holland Park is transforming into the Playful Park of Peculiar, a free, ticketed adventure filled with unusual characters, theatrical encounters and illuminated installations.

Families can meet a giant talking frog, discover the Circus of the Strange, encounter the Peculiar Sisters and watch Professor Popp creating enormous bubbles. There are interactive performances, imaginative characters and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the park in an entirely different atmosphere. Earlier sessions are designed to feel playful and welcoming. As darkness falls, the experience becomes more atmospheric while remaining family-friendly.

Good to know: This is a free event, but tickets are required. The organiser has reported sold-out allocations, so check for any further releases or returns. Explore the Playful Park of Peculiar

Older kids prefer more spooky Halloween activities

Children can investigate mysterious objects in the Witches' Den, follow a Halloween-themed nature trail and learn about bats living in London's Royal Parks. There are also seasonal storytelling sessions at noon, 1pm and 2pm. I particularly like the combination of playful Halloween activities with opportunities to explore the natural world.

The Royal Parks is also bringing its free Halloween Nature Roadshow to Brompton Cemetery.

Children can follow a spooky scavenger trail, explore nature-themed displays, take part in creative activities and discover more about wildlife. Despite its atmospheric setting, the emphasis is on nature and discovery rather than frightening entertainment.

2. LEGOLAND Windsor: Brick or Treat

Location: Windsor, BerkshireDates: Selected dates from 10 October–1 November 2026

Best for: Younger children and primary-school-aged families.

LEGOLAND Windsor's Brick or Treat returns for 2026 with an extensive programme of Halloween entertainment, transforming the resort with giant LEGO monsters, seasonal decorations, themed performances and interactive experiences.

One of this year's highlights is Lord Vampyre's House Party, a lively Halloween dance show featuring the resort's mischievous vampire character. Families can also enjoy the Monster Jam music show, meet costumed LEGO characters and discover themed photo opportunities throughout the park. The celebrations extend to some of LEGOLAND's familiar attractions. Disco Dragon brings a Halloween disco atmosphere to The Dragon rollercoaster, while the Haunted House Monster Party offers another playful encounter with the resort's resident monsters.

Alongside the Halloween programme, families can explore more than 55 rides and attractions, making Brick or Treat a full-day experience rather than a short seasonal activity.

Unlike the more frightening Halloween events at Thorpe Park, LEGOLAND's celebrations are deliberately light-hearted, making them particularly suitable for younger children who enjoy costumes, music and imaginative play.

Good to know: Halloween entertainment is included with park admission, with advance tickets starting from £37 per person. Costumes are encouraged, although full-face costume masks and imitation weapons are not permitted. Check ride availability and opening times for your chosen date. Explore LEGOLAND Windsor's Brick or Treat 2026

Legoland is hosting spooky activities for kids this Halloween

3. Thorpe Park: Fright Nights

Location: Chertsey, SurreyDates: Selected dates in October and early November 2026

Best for: Teenagers aged 13+ who enjoy frightening experiences.

Thorpe Park's Fright Nights offers an altogether more intense Halloween experience, with scare mazes, theatrical scare zones, live entertainment and rollercoasters after dark.

This is not a gentle family Halloween outing, and it's important to consider both age guidance and individual tolerance for frightening effects.

Good to know: Some experiences carry higher age recommendations or require additional tickets. Explore Thorpe Park Fright Nights

4. Crockford Bridge Farm: Pumpkin Picking

Location: Addlestone, Surrey

Best for: Families who want a traditional countryside pumpkin-picking experience.

For families specifically looking to pick pumpkins from a growing field, Crockford Bridge Farm offers a more traditional autumn outing. Children can see where pumpkins grow and select their own during the farm's designated field-picking period.

Later in October, the farm also offers its seasonal pumpkin festival and pumpkin shop.

Good to know: Field picking finishes before the final week of October, so check dates carefully before travelling. Explore Crockford Bridge Farm

5.Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: Dark Arts

Location: Leavesden, Hertfordshire

Dates: 16 September–8 November 2026

Best for: School-age children, older Harry Potter fans and teenagers.

For Harry Potter enthusiasts, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London's Dark Arts is one of the most atmospheric Halloween experiences of the season.

The Great Hall is transformed with more than 100 floating pumpkins, while visitors can explore the original film sets and discover some of the darker elements of the wizarding world.

Throughout the Studio Tour, families can encounter Death Eaters and Dementors, discover the choreography behind the films' dramatic scenes and practise wand-duelling techniques.

It's a particularly memorable experience for children who have grown up with the Harry Potter books and films, combining the magic of the original sets with a distinctly Halloween atmosphere. For older fans, the Studio Tour is also hosting NOX, a separate after-hours Halloween experience on 29, 30 and 31 October.

Good to know: Dark Arts is included with standard Studio Tour admission, but tickets must be booked in advance. NOX is a separately ticketed event. Some of the darker encounters may be unsettling for younger children. Explore Dark Arts at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

6.Hever Castle: Spooktacular Science

Location: Hever, KentDates: 17 October–1 November 2026

Best for: Children aged approximately 4–12.

Hever Castle's Halloween celebrations combine imaginative seasonal entertainment with hands-on scientific discovery, making it an appealing choice for families with primary-school-aged children.

This year's Spooktacular Science programme invites children to follow the Mad Scientist's Halloween Trail through the castle grounds, discovering curious clues and completing activities along the way. Families can also enjoy Dr Frankenstein's Science Adventure Show, an interactive performance filled with experiments, surprising discoveries and audience participation. Children can make their own scientist goggles, while Halloween face painting is available on selected dates.

The castle's beautiful gardens and historic surroundings make this an especially enjoyable autumn day trip, with plenty of opportunities to explore beyond the organised activities.

For older visitors, Hever Castle is also offering separate after-hours haunted castle tours from 29–31 October.

Good to know: The main Halloween activities are included with admission, although face painting costs extra. Evening haunted tours are separately ticketed and are better suited to visitors who enjoy a more atmospheric experience. Explore Halloween at Hever Castle

7.Blenheim Palace: Haunted Half Term and Halloween Trail

Location: Woodstock, Oxfordshire

Dates: Haunted Half Term, 24 October–1 November 2026; Halloween Trail, 22 October–1 November 2026

Best for: Families with younger and primary-school-aged children for daytime activities; older children and families for the evening trail.

Blenheim Palace offers two distinct Halloween experiences this autumn, making it an excellent choice for families looking for a more substantial day trip from London.

During Haunted Half Term, the palace's Walled Garden comes alive with witchy storytelling, circus workshops and fascinating animal encounters with ZooLab. Children can meet unusual creatures, including snakes and frogs, while discovering more about the natural world.

The daytime programme is designed to be playful and imaginative rather than genuinely frightening, making it particularly suitable for younger children.

For a more atmospheric experience, Blenheim's separately ticketed Halloween Trail transforms the palace grounds after dark with dramatic illuminations, theatrical installations and spooky encounters. The combination of historic architecture, extensive grounds and immersive entertainment makes Blenheim Palace one of the more elaborate Halloween destinations within reach of London.

Good to know: Haunted Half Term activities are included with a valid palace day ticket or annual pass. The evening Halloween Trail requires separate tickets. Check the trail's scare guidance when booking for younger children.

Blenheim Palace is wonderful all year round, including Halloween

8.Warwick Castle: The Haunted Castle and Halloween Fright Nights

Location: Warwick, Warwickshire

Dates: Selected dates during October half term 2026; check the official programme for individual event dates.

Best for: Families with primary-school-aged children for daytime activities; older children and teenagers for scarier evening experiences.

Warwick Castle is a wonderfully atmospheric destination for Halloween, combining medieval history, theatrical entertainment and spooky storytelling within the grounds of one of England's most impressive castles.

During its family-friendly Haunted Castle celebrations, visitors can enjoy Halloween-themed entertainment, encounter unusual characters and explore the castle's historic surroundings. The combination of imposing towers, ancient passageways and dramatic grounds makes the experience particularly memorable for children who enjoy history and adventure.

For older children and teenagers seeking something more frightening, Warwick Castle also offers Halloween Fright Nights, with darker theatrical experiences, atmospheric entertainment and scares after sunset. The contrast between the daytime family programme and the more intense evening celebrations makes Warwick Castle an appealing choice for families with children of different ages.

Good to know: Daytime Halloween activities and evening Fright Nights have different ticketing arrangements. Some evening experiences may be unsuitable for younger children, so check individual age guidance and booking requirements before visiting.

The headless horseman at Warwick Castle is a real treat

Halloween Theatre Shows in London 2026

Location: West End and theatres across London

Dates: Throughout October, with special performances during half term

Best for: Families with children of different ages, from younger theatre-goers to teenagers.

London's theatres offer a wonderful alternative to traditional Halloween attractions, with productions ranging from gentle stories about monsters and witches to supernatural musicals and genuinely frightening stage experiences.

Room on the Broom: Rose Theatre, Kingston

Dates: 27 October–1 November 2026

Based on Julia Donaldson's much-loved picture book, Room on the Broom brings the friendly witch and her animal companions to the stage through songs, puppetry and imaginative storytelling. It's a particularly appealing introduction to Halloween theatre for younger children.

FRANKY: Lyric Hammersmith

Dates: 27–31 October 2026

A playful reimagining of Frankenstein for families, FRANKY follows a lonely professor who creates an unusual new companion. Featuring songs, comedy, audience participation and a lovable monster, this is a charming alternative to more frightening Halloween entertainment.

The Dark: Battersea Arts Centre

Dates: 27–31 October 2026, Recommended age: 4+

Adapted from Lemony Snicket's picture book, The Dark follows a young boy confronting his fear of darkness. Combining live music and physical theatre, this imaginative 50-minute production explores courage and childhood fears. Performances are relaxed and include integrated audio description.

Beetlejuice the Musical: Prince Edward Theatre

Dates: Throughout October 2026, Recommended age: 12+

Tim Burton's wonderfully eccentric supernatural world comes to the West End in a spectacular musical filled with ghosts, dark humour and theatrical effects. With elaborate staging and an irreverent sense of humour, it's particularly appealing to teenagers. The production contains strong language, adult humour and mature themes.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Palace Theatre

Dates: Throughout October 2026Best for: Older children and Harry Potter fans.

From 9 October, the production moves to a new single-part format. Combining extraordinary stage illusions, magic and darker elements of the wizarding world, it makes an atmospheric October theatre outing.

The Phantom of the Opera: His Majesty's Theatre

Dates: Throughout October 2026Best for: Older children and teenagers.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Gothic musical offers a dramatic combination of mystery, romance and haunting music. Its masked central character, elaborate staging and Paris Opera House setting make it a natural choice for a Halloween-inspired evening.

The Mousetrap: St Martin's Theatre

Dates: Throughout October 2026. Best for: Older children and teenagers.

Agatha Christie's famous murder mystery offers an evening of suspense, secrets and unexpected revelations. Although not a Halloween production, its tense atmosphere makes it a fitting seasonal choice.

Paranormal Activity: Ambassadors Theatre

Dates: Throughout October 2026. Recommended age: 15+

For teenagers who enjoy genuinely frightening entertainment, Paranormal Activity brings supernatural horror to the stage through unsettling illusions, sudden scares and immersive theatrical effects. Inspired by the film franchise, this production is considerably more intense than the family-friendly shows above.

GrimFest: Barons Court Theatre

Dates: 20–31 October 2026. Best for: Mature older teenagers and adults; check individual productions.

This dedicated festival of dark and twisted theatre features six productions, including Every Ghost Story Ever, Masquerade of the Ripper and The Cabin. It's an interesting option for families with older teenagers who enjoy experimental theatre and darker storytelling.

Good to know: Not all these productions are specifically staged for Halloween. Room on the Broom, FRANKY and GrimFest are seasonal offerings, while the longer-running West End shows have themes particularly suited to October. Check individual age recommendations and content guidance before booking.

Sometimes even the simple Halloween activities at home, are amazing for kids

Halloween Activities for Kids: Choosing by Age

With so many Halloween activities in London and beyond, choosing the right experience often depends on your child's age, interests and appetite for spooky adventures.

  • Ages 3–5: Trotters Halloween storytelling, Chelsea Physic Garden's younger family workshops, Battersea Park Children's Zoo, Hobbledown Heath, Parsons Green Pumpkin Patch, LEGOLAND Windsor's Brick or Treat and gentler Halloween trails.

  • Ages 6–9: The Design Museum's Halloween workshops, Hyde Park Discovery Days, Kensington High Street Halloween Trail, Chelsea Physic Garden's enchanted storytelling and creative workshops, Eltham Palace's Great Pumpkin Party, Chessington's Howl'o'ween and Hever Castle's Spooktacular Science.

  • Ages 10–12: Hampton Court Palace, the Tower of London, Halloween at Kew Gardens, Chessington, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London's Dark Arts, Warwick Castle's Halloween activities and selected creative workshops at Chelsea Physic Garden.

  • Ages 13+: The London Dungeon, Thorpe Park's Fright Nights, Warwick Castle's scarier Halloween experiences, Warner Bros. Studio Tour's Dark Arts and selected after-hours events, later Halloween at Kew sessions and atmospheric ghost-story experiences at historic palaces and castles.

These age groups are suggested guidance rather than official restrictions. Some attractions offer both family-friendly daytime activities and considerably scarier evening experiences, so always check individual age recommendations before booking.

Final Thoughts

Halloween 2026 offers an extraordinary range of activities in London and beyond.

From Chelsea Physic Garden's botanical workshops and the creative celebrations of Kensington High Street to haunted palaces, illuminated gardens, pumpkin picking and theme park adventures, families can choose experiences to suit different ages and interests.

My preference is always to choose a handful of genuinely enjoyable activities rather than try to fill every day.

Whether it's an afternoon of making, a magical evening trail or simply dressing up for trick-or-treating, the best Halloween memories often come from the experiences we enjoy together.

ABOUT THE
KENSINGTON DIARY
™

The Kensington Diary explores how we raise capable children while continuing to build rich, ambitious and interesting lives of our own.

From navigating UK education and the realities of modern family life to formative travel, exceptional places to stay and experiences that broaden a child’s world, we share thoughtful guidance grounded in research, lived experience and curiosity.

We believe family life doesn’t have to become smaller once you have children. It can be a time to explore more deeply, make more intentional choices and create opportunities for children to develop independence, judgement and perspective while continuing to grow ourselves.

Based in London, The Kensington Diary brings together education, travel and family life for parents looking for a more considered way to navigate the formative years.
