Best Santa's Grottos in London 2026: Where to Go by Age

Visiting Father Christmas is one of the traditions I particularly enjoy during the festive season. From the excitement of meeting Santa in one of London’s famous department stores to spending an afternoon immersed in an elaborate Christmas world, there are some wonderful experiences for families to choose from.

Over the years, I’ve found that the best experiences aren’t necessarily the most elaborate. Much depends on a child’s age, their interests and whether they enjoy storytelling, interactive activities or simply the excitement of meeting Father Christmas. A younger child may be completely captivated by a short grotto visit, while an older child might appreciate an immersive adventure where the story unfolds around them.

In this guide to the best Santa’s grottos in London for 2026, I’ve included traditional grottos, festive storytelling and immersive experiences in London and nearby, with age recommendations to help you choose what might suit your family.

Best Santa’s Grottos in London for Different Ages

LaplandUK, Ascot: Best for an Immersive Christmas Adventure

Best for: Ages 3–10

LaplandUK is one of the most elaborate immersive Christmas experiences for families, set in a Lapland-inspired wonderland in Berkshire. Children journey through interactive workshops, including toy-making and gingerbread decorating, meet elves in the Elven Village and enjoy a personalised visit with Father Christmas, who knows their names, wishes and favourite activities.

What makes LaplandUK different from a traditional grotto is the scale of the experience. Rather than simply meeting Father Christmas, children participate in a carefully constructed story, with opportunities to make things, interact with the characters and explore the Elven Village.

We’ve visited LaplandUK three years in a row, and it remains one of the most extraordinary Christmas experiences we’ve enjoyed as a family. What makes it so special is the attention to detail throughout the entire journey. It feels like entering a completely different world, rather than simply visiting Father Christmas, and the experience has been just as magical on our return visits.

It’s an experience worth planning well in advance, particularly if you have a specific date in mind. The Ascot experience runs from 7 November to 24 December 2026, although the main booking window has closed.

Anya’s Grotto, Belgravia: Best for an Imaginative Christmas Adventure

Best for: Ages 2–8

Anya Hindmarch brings her distinctive sense of imagination and playful design to Christmas at Anya’s Village on Pont Street. Children embark on a North Pole adventure, collecting an expedition log before travelling through a world of crunchy snow, twinkling baubles and icicle caves. The experience ends with a festive story beside the fire, shared with Father Christmas himself.

Unlike a conventional grotto, this is a carefully designed, 30-minute theatrical experience with small groups, making it particularly appealing for younger children who enjoy storytelling and imaginative play.

Anya Hindmarch’s imaginative approach to design makes this one of the Christmas experiences I’m particularly looking forward to exploring this year. The emphasis on storytelling and creating an entire world around Father Christmas is especially appealing, and it looks like a lovely option for families who appreciate a more thoughtfully designed festive experience.

Dates: 7 November–24 December 2026. Advance booking required.

Santa’s Grotto at Duke of York Square, Chelsea: Best for a Festive Chelsea Outing

Best for: Ages 3–8

Chelsea is one of my favourite London neighbourhoods to explore during the Christmas season, particularly around Duke of York Square and Sloane Square.

Duke of York Square has previously hosted a traditional Santa’s grotto, offering children the opportunity to meet Father Christmas and enjoy festive storytelling in the heart of Chelsea. Last year's was Ralph Lauren themed version of the 12 Days of Christmas and just spectacular.

We particularly loved our experience at Hamleys. Despite being in one of London’s busiest toy stores, the grotto felt remarkably personal, warm and friendly. The interaction with Father Christmas was beautifully handled, and we came away feeling that genuine care had gone into making the experience special for each child. It’s one I would happily recommend.

For families planning a Christmas outing in the neighbourhood, it can be combined with the seasonal decorations, local shops and festive atmosphere. The 2026 grotto arrangements should be confirmed before booking.

I’ll be sharing more of our favourite seasonal experiences in a separate guide to Christmas in Chelsea with Kids.

The Polar Express Train Ride, London Euston: Best for Children Who Love Christmas Stories

Best for: Ages 4–10

Inspired by the much-loved Christmas story, The Polar Express takes families aboard a festive train journey where music, theatrical performances and storytelling bring the adventure to life.

Children are encouraged to arrive in their pyjamas, ready to board with their golden tickets. Once aboard, the story unfolds around them, with festive characters and the anticipation of meeting Father Christmas.

We enjoyed the Polar Express from London Kings Cross, although I would approach it differently from a traditional Santa’s grotto. The meeting with Father Christmas is quite brief and less personalised, but the real appeal is the journey itself. The music, characters and theatrical atmosphere make it a fun family experience, particularly for children who know and love the story.

Having experienced the Polar Express ourselves, I think much of its appeal lies in the opportunity for children to become part of a story they already know. For those who love the film or book, the excitement begins before they even board the train.

The London Euston experience is scheduled for December 2026.

Hamleys’ Magical Grotto, Regent Street: Best for Younger Children

Best for: Ages 2–8

Located in one of London’s most famous toy stores, Hamleys’ Magical Grotto has traditionally offered a playful setting for meeting Father Christmas.

Children are welcomed into a festive environment with storytelling, games and a personal visit with Santa, usually leaving with a keepsake gift. The excitement of visiting Hamleys during the Christmas season adds another dimension to the occasion, particularly for younger children who enjoy the atmosphere of the toy store.

Hamleys’ previous Regent Street grotto was designed primarily for children aged two to eight. Check its current Christmas programme for confirmation of the 2026 experience and booking arrangements.

Father Christmas Storytelling at Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly: Best for a Traditional Christmas Experience

Best for: Ages 4–9

For families looking for something more traditional, Father Christmas Storytelling at Fortnum & Mason offers an appealing alternative to a conventional grotto.

Set within the historic Piccadilly department store, the experience centres on the pleasure of listening to Father Christmas tell a festive story. It is particularly suited to children who enjoy imaginative storytelling and the anticipation of Christmas.

A visit can also be combined with exploring Fortnum & Mason’s seasonal displays and Christmas food halls, making it a lovely festive outing in central London.

Other Santa's Grottos in London Worth Considering

There are several other Christmas experiences across London that may be worth exploring, including Santa's Winter Garden at Fulham Palace, the Victorian Santa's Grotto at London Museum Docklands and Santa's Grotto at the Queen's House in Greenwich.

While we haven't personally visited these, they offer interesting alternatives, particularly for families looking for festive storytelling, historic settings or a more traditional visit to Father Christmas. I've included them as additional options rather than personal recommendations, so families can explore what best suits their children's ages and interests.

Santa’s Winter Garden at Fulham Palace: Best for an Outdoor Christmas Adventure

Best for: Ages 3–9

For Christmas 2026, Fulham Palace is hosting Santa’s Winter Garden, transforming its historic walled gardens into an immersive festive experience.

Families can explore illuminated trails, a snow maze and other Christmas installations before enjoying seasonal activities, including biscuit decorating and crafts. The experience culminates in a private meeting with Father Christmas.

The combination of outdoor exploration, interactive activities and a personal Santa visit makes this particularly appealing for children who prefer an active experience rather than waiting in a traditional grotto queue.

Santa’s Winter Garden runs from 20 November to 23 December 2026.

Victorian Santa’s Grotto at London Museum Docklands: Best for Children Who Enjoy History

Best for: Ages 4–9

London Museum Docklands offers a rather different Christmas experience, recreating the atmosphere of a Victorian Christmas within its Sailortown gallery.

Children can meet Father Christmas in a Dickensian-style grotto and receive an age-appropriate gift inspired by traditional Victorian toys and games. The historical setting makes this an interesting choice for families who enjoy combining Christmas traditions with a little cultural discovery.

Visits last approximately 15 minutes, making this a more manageable option for younger children or families who prefer a shorter Santa experience. The museum also offers quieter sessions for children who would benefit from a calmer environment.

The grotto runs from 20 November to 23 December 2026.

Santa’s Grotto at the Queen’s House, Greenwich: Best for Storytelling and History

Best for: Ages 4–9

Set within the beautiful Queen’s House in Greenwich, this immersive Christmas experience brings together festive storytelling and the grandeur of a former royal residence. Children embark on a theatrical adventure inspired by The Snow Queen, meeting enchanting characters along the way before arriving at Father Christmas’s grotto.

It’s a lovely alternative to a traditional department-store grotto, particularly for families who enjoy imaginative storytelling and exploring London’s historic landmarks.

Dates: 14 November–24 December 2026.

How to Choose the Best Santa’s Grotto for Your Child

One of the most important considerations is age. For toddlers and younger children, the opportunity to meet Father Christmas in a beautifully decorated room may be more than enough. A shorter, quieter experience can be particularly enjoyable for children who are meeting Santa for the first time.

For primary-school children, experiences that include storytelling, activities and opportunities to participate often offer more to engage with. LaplandUK, the Polar Express and Santa’s Winter Garden are particularly appealing for children who enjoy becoming part of a Christmas adventure.

I’d also consider how much time you want to devote to the occasion. A traditional grotto can fit comfortably into an afternoon in London, while an immersive experience may become the main event of your family’s Christmas celebrations.

And there is no particular reason to book several. Choosing one experience that suits your child’s age and interests can be far more enjoyable than trying to fit too much into an already busy December.

Making Christmas More Intentional

With so many wonderful Christmas experiences available, it’s easy to feel that we should be doing everything. But the traditions children remember most aren’t necessarily the most expensive or elaborate.

I think there’s something valuable in choosing a smaller number of experiences that genuinely matter to your family, leaving enough time to enjoy the season without rushing from one activity to another.

Our Intentional Festive Guide explores how to approach Christmas more thoughtfully, choosing the traditions and experiences that make the season meaningful rather than simply filling the calendar.

Wishing You a Joyous Christmas in London

London’s festive offerings are second to none, and sharing these magical moments with my family makes the season even more special. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, these experiences are sure to create lasting memories for you and your little ones.

Much Love
